Develop Stockholm's environmental program
The City of Stockholm develops a new environmental program for the period 2020-2023. The environmental program is one of the city's tools for controlling and coordinating its own operations in an environmentally sustainable direction. Work on the new program focuses on the major environmental problems. Through a stronger focus on developing cooperation, the City of Stockholm wants to create the conditions for securing a good living environment in the future of Stockholm and to solve the global environmental problems. We invite you as a member of the Climate Pact to give suggestions and to follow our efforts to develop the new environmental program.
Background:
For decades, Stockholm has been one of the world's leading environmental cities. A good local environment is of great importance for people's health and well-being. At the same time, the global environmental threat has grown in dignity. Stockholm is very much affected, and the city's environmental work must therefore be both local and global. The UN climate targets under the Paris Agreement and the environment-related goals of Agenda 2030 are of great relevance to Stockholm, and they therefore have a given place in local environmental work.
The growing consumption means increased consumption of natural resources, waste problems and an extensive climate, environmental and health impact both in and outside Sweden. A more sustainable consumption is the basis for a circular economy and good resource management. This may include choosing products that may or have been recycled, that they do not contain harmful substances or are difficult to recycle.
In order to drive a circular development, the city in its own business can choose products and services wisely. A progressively increasing knowledge of how the own operations' consumption and use of resources can be used in the environmental work are important steps to continuously improve the conditions for a sustainable living environment.
Challenge:
How can the business community contribute to a more sustainable production of the city's goods and services?
How can the business sector contribute to a more sustainable consumption of the goods and services that the city buys?
Target group:
We turn to companies in the climate pact.
What happens to the ideas:
Ideas and views that come in are collected by the City of Stockholm project group for the environmental program and form the basis for the work on developing the new environmental program, with a special focus on a clearer and more effective collaboration with external parties. Getting to use the Climate Pact members would give the opportunity to get ideas and views from a committed target group that already collaborates with the city in climate and environmental issues.
Ideas and suggestions
From your perspective as an entrepreneur, what is needed for us to be able to have an effective collaboration between the City of Stockholm and the business community to develop Stockholm into a sustainable city with a good living environment? The collection of ideas runs until 30 June 2019.
Tie carbon dioxide into the city's plantations and on roofs
Perhaps this is already done, but it is an idea to choose what to plant in Stockholm's decorative plants based on the type of plants that bind most carbon dioxide. Placing sedum roofs on new buildings also helps to bind carbon dioxide.
Rainwater / stormwater collection
That we flush our toilets with drinking water is a big waste. There are flexible systems for recovering rainwater for flushing of washing machines and toilet water. This would also make it easier for the sewage treatment plants, etc. It should therefore be encouraged more, perhaps with some form of grant or tax relief. For new construction this today is not even intended in the planning. Water shortage is becoming more apparent every year and is expected to increase in step with global warming. Above all, this should be applied for sprinkler systems for public lawns etc so that primarily rainwater and not drinking water are used.
Domestic tourism
Invest much more on marketing the city as a tourist destination against domestic tourism.
The city's contributions from tourists will be as great if the tourists come from Stockholm and Sweden. In a time of climate collapse, it is not sustainable that every country and city compete to fly in as many as possible from other countries.
Tourism benefits the city, and is also a driving force in preserving the city's nature. But the proportions of domestic and foreign tourists can change without reducing the amount of tourism.
Also raise Stockholm as a train resort, towards foreign tourists!
Strategies against littering
- Encourage junk picking initiatives, such as logging and junk mail. Provide positive feedback when a pickup has been announced in the Tyck TIll app.
- Support junk picking initiatives in the form of spread of date and place, and that initiators have someone to communicate with in Stockholm city.
- In-depth follow-up on how the garbage picking that the city procured works. Extra important in nature areas and near watercourses.
- Uppsala has several working strategies against littering, peeking at them, asking them to come and tell!
Easy sorting at the city's bins
The idea is about sorting debris to a greater extent than today at general paper bins. Perhaps the vessels could be divided into several sections with clear markings for what to throw in each section. However, I understand the challenge of getting everyone to throw the right junk in the right section. Maybe using nudging?
If nothing else, a specific container for mortgages so those who are looking for a pledge do not have to mess with the garbage.
Raise green businesses
It is important that companies, organizations, politicians and private individuals come together to curb the climate crisis and promote biodiversity.
The companies can have many different business ideas and at the same time work to reduce their impact on climate and biodiversity.
A group of companies, however, have as their own idea and reason why they started to actively work for biodiversity, and help more people reduce their climate impact. These are often small green companies run by enthusiasts with little resources and small margins. To highlight green companies would have positive synergies for everyone. The changeover is driven on, and in addition, local trade is promoted.
A good example is Strängnäs, which on its website highlights sustainable experiences.
Just right in time, when more and more people want to shop locally, vacation without flights, and eat organic!
Improve cycle paths and cycle maps to outer areas
Improve cycle paths and cycle maps to the outer areas, eg Älvsjö. The cycle paths could be lined with information about sights, historical facts, etc. Everything to promote the cycling in the city.
Preserve and develop city parks
The city's biodiversity, resilience in climate change, and the residents' recreation are strengthened by parks and green areas.
Developing the city's parks and green areas, and creating new ones, with a focus on biodiversity is part of Stockholm as a future city.
Here space can also be made for cultivation boxes, and thus also increase the self-sufficiency.
We cannot build on green surfaces, or make green surfaces and parks smaller to surface or number.
Less grass mowing in Stockholm
There are many nice lawns in Stockholm. Some of them could be replaced by flower beds to save on the lawn mowers fuel and also contribute to the survival of bees and other insects. One could advantageously place bi- and insect hotels in connection with the meadows.
Cooperation city and school - hotel
To create engagement among the young, the city could encourage / sponsor the schools to set up hotel hotels in suitable places in the city, preferably in connection with the school. It could combine benefits with pleasure. Children learn about the benefits of bees and other insects (biology), and about sustainability in a practical way. In addition, it could be a collaboration with the craft if the children were allowed to build their own hotels. To some extent, there is also suitable material to collect in nature (cones, for example).
Requirements for sustainability communication
In order to benefit Stockholm city's hospitality industry, inspire tourists and other visitors to the city, the sustainable Stockholm should be highlighted in all communication, for example, the City's stakeholder company could do this even more.
Cooperate with the HEIs
As a property owner, it is important and natural for us at Akademiska Hus to cooperate with the major higher education institutions, which are also our most important tenants. In Stockholm, it is primarily KTH that we cooperate with in sustainability issues. I think it is important that the city emphasizes collaboration with colleges and those companies with activities in the area of sustainability (eg new mobility solutions) that grow up in connection with colleges and universities.
Referral phase
The collection of ideas is now complete. The City of Stockholm has collected ideas from the members of the Climate Pact. Ideas and views are taken care of and must contribute to the development of a new environmental program. The environmental program has been submitted for consultation. The consultation period for the program is 20 November 2019 to 17 January 2020.
